Busiswa Gqulu, popular;y known as Busiswa is a South African singer and songwriter. She gained public recognition for her feature on DJ Zinhle's song, "My Name Is", after being discovered by Oskido, the CEO of Kalawa Jazmee. She has carved a niche for herself in the music industry weaving through the different types of Afro-house music in South Africa
She was born on the 8th of November, 1988 in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Busiswa grew passionate about poetry and started writing poems at the age of 15. She performed her first poem at her grandmother’s funeral. In 2005, she joined Young Basadzi Women of Poetry, a collective of young female poets. She went on to perform her poetry pieces at various events across the country. She got employed at an art center to teach school children arts.
Busiswa was introduced to Sir Bubzin who featured her on a track called Syaphambana. Superstar Producer, Oskido signed Busiswa and Sir Bubzin after the record dropped. Later that year, Dj Zintle featured Busiswa on My Name Is. The song became a hit in South Africa and across Africa.
Busiswa has gone on to release three albums with a couple of nominations. She was also featured in Beyonce’s Lion King album on the track, My Power.
Her big break came with the release of Dj Zintle's single, My Name Is, where she was featured.
Did you know that in addition to her poetry, Busiswa also works for Arts For Humanity (AFH), where she provides workshop for school children?
